Stripping Gold Medals

After stripping Nigerian sprinter Folashade Abugan of her Commonwealth games gold medal, the dope scandals resumed after testing Sri Lanka’s bantamweight boxer Manju Wanniarachchi positive for using a banned steroid nandrolone during his final boxing match. Stripping Sri Lanka of its 1st Commonwealth Games gold medal ever in 7 decades came as shocking news for the sports reporters, sports bookmakers and for the fans of boxing.

Wanniarachchi was able to beat Sean McGoldrick with points difference in the Indian Capital Delhi earlier throughout this month, ending the 72-years of wait for a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games for Sri Lanka… the drama emerged when the celebrations got called off after testing the boxing fighter positive to the drug test.

President of the Sri Lanka National Olympic Committee acknowledged during a live interview on Monday that a letter from the Commonwealth Games anti-doping committee pointed that Wanniarachchi's sample A had residues of nandrolone, in large quantities.

The President affirmed that the letter was delivered to Wanniarachchi in the presence of national boxing association officials, stating that the case is now up to them to take the appropriate decision whether Sri Lankan boxer Wanniarachchi should undergo a test for his 'B' sample or stay put. Referring to the anti-dope committee, If sample B tests positive too, Wanniarachchi risks losing his commonwealth Games gold medal not to mention facing a ban from boxing as declared by Mr Fernando whose exact words were quoted by:  "We have been made to understand that Wanniarachchi is an innocent victim of this sad state of affairs. He was injected with this drug 6 months ago having obtained it from a medical practitioner. If that is the case, we will try to mitigate with the World Anti-Doping Agency for a lenient punishment."

Boxing champion Wanniarachchi wil now face a 2-year ban from boxing if 'B' sample comes up with a positive result; note that the organisation had already stripped the Sri Lanka boxing champion of his gold medal, whilst awaiting the final decision about his boxing career.

Note that the Sri Lankan boxer joins the list along with 4 other athletes to test positive for drugs usage at the Delhi Games.

Note that the bet on games has been largely affected by the doping issues, given that several results were called off due to usage of steroids… the online betting sites, sports bookmakers and sports betting panels are currently awaiting the anti-dope results before paying out the extra cash for the lucky fans of sports betting, knowing that a cancelled result by the anti-dope organization is a cancelled bet as well… at least in few betting websites whereas other sports bookmakers are still set to deliver the money to every winning bet regardless of the doping tests.
